Athletic Training Education Program

Alumni Perspectives

I transferred to Stony Brook University from another institution and had no intentions of staying long term. After meeting Xristos and Kathy, I learned about the Athletic Training Education Program and decided to stay. I think it was a very worthwhile decision. I feel very well prepared for the responsibilities and the decisions I make at work as a full time athletic trainer at a private high school. The variety of experiences we gained with athletics on campus, at high schools and with physicians definitely contributed to my learning. I observed several surgeries during my senior year: ACL reconstruction, meniscal repair and a fascia release of the lower leg; they were awesome!
I remember when I started my clinical experiences and thought that it was difficult to gain the athlete’s confidence at first. In the same way, it took time for my student-athletes at the high school to get to know me. However, with time and proving my knowledge and skills I was able to gain their trust. It’s a great feeling to know that I’m trusted and appreciated for what I do to care for the athletes.

I wasn’t what I would call the ‘usual’ athletic training student. I had a very diverse background in terms of my interests and education. Ultimately, I chose to do athletic training and now work as and athletic trainer and personal trainer at a personal training facility. Outside of the classroom experience, I thought our rotations with the physicians were unbelievable. Dr. White’s general medical rotation was fantastic; he basically handed me a lab coat and let me experience what it was like to work with the patients immediately!
Now, even after I’ve graduated, the faculty continues to offer me support. They’ve answered numerous questions and offered advice regarding my preparation for the BOC exam and for my business ventures outside of the traditional athletic training settings.

I’m currently in graduate school for Physical Education and work part-time as an athletic trainer at a high school. The Stony Brook University Athletic Training Education Program prepared me for my job: I feel very comfortable and have confidence in what I’m doing to care for the athletes. In addition to the awesome faculty and clinical experiences that showed athletic training in a positive light, I also enjoyed our extra service events such as the 5K races on campus. I felt that we all worked well together helping the general public and we seemed more like family.
