Richard J. Boergers, MS, ATC

R.J. Boergers joined the Stony Brook University Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) as an assistant professor in September of 2003. In addition to his teaching duties, he coordinates all aspects of student clinical experiences. His role in clinical education includes serving as the Clinical Instructor Educator (CIE) for the ATEP. As the CIE, he is responsible for training all of Stony Brook University’s approved clinical instructors (ACIs) who supervise the students at their clinical experiences. Boergers coordinates Stony Brook’s Board of Certification (BOC) continuing education courses. He is a member of the NATA, EATA, and NYSATA. He is also an AAOS Emergency Care and Safety Institute certified instructor for First Aid, CPR & AED. His research interests include the study of upper extremity injury pathomechanics and injury prevention strategies using motion analysis and EMG.

Boergers is a graduate of SUNY Cortland where he received a BS in Health Science/Athletic Training. He received a Master’s Degree in Human Performance from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. He is currently finishing his PhD in Health Science with a concentration in Movement Science at Seton Hall University. His experiences as a staff certified athletic trainer come from Wofford College in South Carolina and Seton Hall University in New Jersey. While at Seton Hall, he also served as an adjunct faculty member and approved clinical instructor (ACI) for the entry level Master’s Program in Athletic Training.

R.J. is married to Courtney Boergers, Director of Student-Athlete Development for Stony Brook Athletics. In his free time, R.J. enjoys hunting, fishing, mountain biking, and kayaking.
