The Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP), offered by the School of Health Technology and Management, is a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accredited program.

MISSION STATEMENT & PROGRAM GOALS
The Mission of the Stony Brook University (SBU) ATEP is to provide students with an extensive and comprehensive didactic and clinical education from which to build a strong foundation for a career in the field of athletic training. This comprehensive professional preparation is directed toward the development of specified competencies in the following domains: prevention, clinical evaluation and diagnosis, immediate care, treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning, organization and administration, and professional responsibility. The Athletic Training Student (ATS) will have the opportunity to develop applied technical and clinical skills incorporating analytical problem-solving abilities to assist with the daily operation of traditional and non-traditional athletic training settings. Athletic training students who successfully complete the undergraduate ATEP and subsequent to passing the Board of Certification (BOC) Examination qualify for an entry-level career in athletic training. Subsequently passing the BOC Examination, ATS will need to apply for certification by the New York State Education Department Office of Professions, which is required to practice athletic training in the state. Certified athletic trainers are required to perform within their scope of practice as mandated by the legal statutes of each state. In addition, ATS will be able to pursue graduate level education in athletic training and other allied health or medical fields.
An athletic trainer is an allied health care professional responsible for the management of injuries and illnesses associated with sports participation. Working under a physician’s supervision, and along with other allied health care professionals, the athletic trainer is an integral member of the sports medicine team in secondary schools, two-year institutions, four-year colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics (depending upon the state), industrial settings, professional athletic teams, and other athletic health care settings. The athletic trainer is responsible for the development and coordination of efficient and responsive athletic health care delivery systems.
The Athletic Training Education Program at SBU combines classroom, laboratory and clinical education experiences in a process that culminates with the student graduating with eligibility to take the BOC Examination. Although our patient population has traditionally been those individuals who meet the definition of athlete, athletic trainers render services in a managed-care model addressing the medical care of the physically active. The program provides a global understanding of the rapidly changing health care provider system and the evolving base of our potential clientele.
At the time of graduation athletic training students are able to:
- demonstrate proficiency in the cognitive and psychomotor skills identified in the Competencies in Education;
- display clinical skill and competence in the psychomotor skills identified in the Competencies in Education;
- display ethical behavior in accordance with professional standards;
- collect, interpret, and disseminate information in an effective manner;
- display effective oral and written communication skills that are appropriate to the population being addressed;
- know the purpose of professional continuing education requirements, the methods available for obtaining them, and the need for life-long learning;
- recognize the athletic trainer’s role in the present and emerging health care arena;
- appreciate the need for science-based efficacy of our profession through ongoing research and publication;
- respect and treat the patient as an individual without regard to race, color, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, political, or religious affiliation.
